Upholstery Care

To keep your upholstery in good condition, you should have a professional clean it at least once a year. Do this before it gets visibly dirty. It’s harder to restore a sofa, for example, back to it’s original state if it’s not being properly cleaned and maintained.

There are some simple things you can do in-between professional cleanings to keep your furniture in good condition and looking vibrant.

Rotate Cushions

You should rotate pillows and cushions weekly to distribute the wear evenly.

Vacuum

Weekly vacuuming is a must. Use your vacuum’s upholstery attachment and crevice tool to clean it out.

Stop Inc Bleeding

Be careful not to place newspapers, magazines, or other printed materials lying on your upholstery. This can cause unwanted ink bleeding onto the fabric.

No Sunlight

Avoid placing your upholstery in sunlight. This will cause the upholstery colors to fade.

Household Chemicals

Be careful when using household chemicals and cleaning supplies near upholstery. Applying non-commercial scented fabric fresheners and fabric protectors are never recommended.

Fabric Protection

You can purchase a natural fabric protection agent and apply this to the upholstery. This will coat the fibers of your upholstery fabric, reducing penetration of soil and stains.

Spills and Spot Cleaning

  • Always blot and never rub with a clean absorbent white cloth.
  • Blot from the outside to the middle.
  • Always pretest cleaning agents on a small and unnoticeable area.
  • Only use distilled water.

Water Damage Restoration

This needs to be done by a professional. It is important to respond quickly to water damage. Water is extracted from the upholstery. Proper extraction and drying techniques help minimize the possibility of secondary damage and potential microbial growth.

Smoke Damage Restoration

This needs to be done by a professional. The most important thing to remove from upholstery after a fire is soot. Soot is oil-based so it needs to be removed very quickly. Proper methods need to be used to avoid driving the soot deeper into fabrics. Specialty equipment is necessary to properly remove smoke and soot damage.

Yearly Professional Cleaning

When upholstery gets a a professional cleaning, it will deodorize and protect your upholstery with a chemical that will create an invisible barrier around the fibers of the upholstery. The cleaning will improve resistance to dry soil, water-based stains and daily wear and tear. There are also deodorizers that can be applied to neutralize all the odors and eliminate them at their source.
