Insurance Claims Process ? State Farm, Farmers, Allstate, etc.

Home claims can be complex and confusing when fire and water disasters occur. This article is written for homeowners to better understand the insurance claims process.

State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, AIG, Travelers, et cetera, although different insurers, all operate their claims process in the same fashion. Below is an outline of the process with notes to help you better understand each step.

1. Disaster Occurs ? Water damage, Fire Damage, Etc.

2. Call an Emergency Service Restoration Contractor

Emergency restoration services minimize the damage to save you money. Be sure the restoration company is a licensed contractor, bonded and insured, and meets the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lead-based paint requirements.

3. Know your policy

Read your homeowner’s policy thoroughly to know what is covered and what is not.

4. Call your insurance company and file a claim.

During this phone call, a claim number will be assigned ? save this. Certain insurance companies have preferred vendor programs ? if you choose to use this, be careful. Sometimes their contractors are unlicensed and do not meet EPA requirements.

5. Claims adjuster will be assigned

He/she will work directly with you and your contractor on prices. Your insurance company will pay you directly (less your deductible) and it will be your responsibility to pay your contractor. Note: Insurance standard pricing is used by experienced restoration contractors.

6. Keep in contact.

Make sure your restoration service, yourself and your adjuster are on the same page at all times.

7. Finish restoration and pay your contractor.
